Three Important Drop Ceiling Tile Cuts
Straight Cuts
For straight cuts, first measure the size of the grid that the tile will be going in.
Once you have the proper measurements, sketch them out on the front of a drop ceiling tile. This will give you a guideline to go by during the cutting process. Then, using a straight edge and a sharp utility knife, score the tile. Next pass over the scored line a second time cutting through the tile completely.
Interior Cuts
Measure the holes that'll be made in the tile. These holes will be cut for air vents, lights, fans and other fixtures.
Once you have measured the holes, outline them on the front of the drop ceiling tile. Using a keyhole saw, very slowly cut out the holes.
Make sure to take your time to prevent cracking the tile. Hold the tile firmly so you do not get off track.
Once you have finished cutting, carefully push out the cut tile. Now brush away any rough areas and if you have any small rips in the tile, you can fix them by coating them with white touch-up paint.
Rabbet Cuts
Start by cutting a lip around a drop ceiling tile. Place the tile in the grid you'll be filling. With a pencil, draw a line along the grid and mark the tile.
Remove the tile, and with a utility knife, score the line you have drawn. Cut the line at a depth of half the tile. Peel off the strip of the tile creating the rabbet cut. This will let the tile set level in the grid.
