Seven Steps to Install Recessed Lighting
1. Choose Your Lights: This is a very important part of the process. When you go shopping for recessed lights, make sure you choose the right ones that are rated to work with drop ceilings.
Some recessed lights get very hot and can cause a fire if wrongly installed in drop ceilings. A great alternative is LED recessed lights. These burn much cooler and will also save you money on your power bill.
2. Pick Your Layout: Make sure to layout your lights before actually cutting any holes. Using a sheet of paper, layout your room and make sure to take into account your drop ceiling’s height to get proper lighting coverage.
3. Add Some Support: Some recessed lighting can be heavy and you wouldn't want to install them without any support.
Make sure to add some extra wire supports around the tiles where your lighting is going to be installed, in order to make it strong enough for the load.
4. Cut Your Holes: Using a pencil, trace the outline of your light onto your drop ceiling tile. Make sure to center the light properly.
Take your time and make sure to measure twice before cutting. After you're certain about your position, cut out the hole using a keyhole saw.
5. Place The Light into Position: Remove the tile next to the one you'll be installing the light in. Use this as an access point to place your new light into position.
6. Wire in Your Lights: This is best performed by a professional electrician. Electricity can be dangerous, so make sure to take all necessary precautions and follow all instructions if you're wiring your own lights.
7. Complete The Job: Now that you have installed your lights, it’s time to put the bulbs in and enjoy!
